The Brutal Truth About U.S. Universities Nobody Tells You
Apr 22, 2025
If you're planning to study in the U.S. this fall or in 2026… this blog might save you ₹40+ lakhs, two years of regret, and a massive blow to your dreams.
I’m not here to scare you.
But someone needs to tell you the truth, before it’s too late.
Because right now, too many Indian students are walking into a trap… and they won’t even realize it until they’re thousands of miles away from home, stuck in debt, jobless, and disillusioned.
Let’s talk about what’s really going on in the U.S. university scene and how to protect your future.
There was a time when many of these universities were genuinely good.
Between 2014 and 2020, some U.S. colleges worked hard to support international students. People had good experiences. Word-of-mouth was strong.
But then COVID hit.
Suddenly, universities faced huge revenue losses.
No students meant no money.
And instead of rebuilding with integrity, they found a shortcut: treat students like cash cows.
Here’s how:
- They partnered aggressively with Indian consultancies, offering ₹4–8 lakhs ($5,000–10,000) per student referred.
- Consultancies pushed only their partner universities, regardless of whether they were a good fit for you.
Students who asked about other colleges were scared off with lies like:
– You won’t get the admit.
– Your visa chances are low.
– They’re not taking students from your background.
None of it was true.
But students fell for it, because we trust these consultants.
► If you're in this phase right now, here's what to do:
– Ask the consultancy exactly which universities they’re partnered with.
– Cross-check those colleges online.
– Don’t rely on one person’s advice
– Talk to seniors from each program you’re considering.
1. Why "Co-Op", "RA", and "100% Placement" Are Just Marketing Traps
Let’s break down the shiny words universities and consultants throw around.
→ You’ll get a co-op
Yes, technically you're eligible.
But out of 3,000+ students, maybe 5–10 get one through the college portal.
The rest? You’re on your own, cold emailing, applying on LinkedIn, and hustling.
→ 100% placement rate
That was 2021, not 2025.
Back then, every other student had 2-3 job offers.
Today? You’re lucky to get one callback.
→ You’ll get an on-campus job
They don’t tell you this: 3,000+ students are competing for 50–60 part-time jobs.
Most students end up working off-campus illegally and risk deportation.
→ You’ll get RA/TA with a tuition waiver
Only 1–2% of students actually do.
The rest still pay full fees and struggle with rent.
Bottom line?
These aren’t guarantees.
They’re marketing hooks.
2. The Real Cost of Studying in the Wrong University
–Average tuition: $50,000 to $80,000
–Living expenses: $20,000–$30,000
–Total investment: ₹50–70 lakhs
Now imagine:
You can’t get the classes you want because batch sizes are 3,000+ and class capacity is 60–100.
You stay up all night in the library (better Wi-Fi) to register at 6 AM, and still don’t get the course.
You don’t land a co-op or part-time job.
You graduate with a watered-down degree… and no offer in hand.
ALso, When universities give admission to anyone and everyone:
You lose peer quality.
Groupism, drama, and negativity increase.
Your roommates work 60 hours/week at gas stations and restaurants.
Your motivation drops.
You start questioning your worth.
Environment shapes mindset.
And when the people around you stop dreaming, you slowly do too.
3. So, What Can You Do Differently?
- Don’t just look at university rankings.
→ Instead, look at the specific program you’re applying for.
→ How are job outcomes for that program?
→ Who are the alumni? Where are they working?
- Talk to students who graduated in 2023 or are graduating in 2024.
→ Don’t take advice from the 2021 batch, their experience is outdated. - Dig into LinkedIn.
→ Search people by university and graduation year.
→ Check their job outcomes. Are they still unemployed? Did they extend their course?
- Ask the hard questions.
→ How many internships?
→ Did you get a part-time job?
→ How many students are in your cohort?
- Don’t blindly trust consultancies.
→ If they’re unwilling to help you explore non-partner universities, walk away.
→ It’s your future, not theirs.
4. Wrapping it Up
Some universities grew to $150+ million/year in tuition revenue from international students.
But they…
Don’t give students access to LinkedIn Premium
Don’t offer conference scholarships
Don’t invest in job-hunting courses
Don’t hire more faculty to match the batch size
Why?
Because they don’t have to.
We don’t question them.
If you're from a middle-class family, if your parents are betting everything on your U.S. dream, please don’t make a blind decision.
The U.S. is still a land of opportunity.
But it won’t reward you just because you showed up.
It will reward you only if you:
–Ask better questions
–Choose better environments
–Invest in better preparation
There are students who get full-time jobs within months.
There are others who leave after two years, broken.
Same country.
Same degree.
Different path.
Let this be your turning point.
– Start researching now.
– Talk to 10 students, not just 1.
– Look at data, not promises.
📌 And if you're already in the U.S. and feeling stuck, it's not too late.
You can still turn it around with the right guidance, strategy, and support.
You're not alone in this.
But you do have to fight smart.
Your dreams are too big to waste on bad decisions.
Let’s make sure no one walks into the trap again.
